Volunteer Policy Statement
Inn Out of the Cold is dependent on the energy and generosity of its volunteers, and will strive to minimize any risk associated with volunteering at the shelter. In order to do so, Inn Out of the Cold will implement an appropriate screening policy regarding all volunteers at the shelter.
Volunteer Screening Process
Volunteer screening is designed to ensure that volunteers take on the responsibilities that best suit them. The process attempts to isolate the risks related to specific volunteer positions and establishes appropriate methods to reduce the risk. It is important to note that volunteers will be screened both before and during their involvement with the shelter. Police background checks are required of all our Inn Out of the Cold volunteers. Volunteers will be reimbursed the cost of the Police background check upon approval of the volunteer position.
“I offered my time when I spoke with a representative of the Inn Out of the Cold at the info display at the Fire Muster in Pinafore Park.
I volunteer my time at the Inn Out of the Cold Shelter once a week and when I can do more I drop in and help for awhile.
My most favorite part is the social interaction with the clients. I get to meet new people and make new friends while contributing to the purpose of the shelter. You never know who is going to come in.
Anyone can have a fire in their house and need somewhere to go for the night. The shelter is here to help everyone, not just the homeless. Sometimes people are just down on their luck or an emergency comes up and you need somewhere to go.
If you find yourself in a situation where you just need somewhere to go for a short time or a long time, come see us at Inn Out of the Cold.“
Volunteering at Inn Out of the Cold is a great experience. I love giving back to the community, just like the movie “Pay it Forward”.
I had no idea there were so many people homeless in St. Thomas. A friend who knew about the Shelter asked me if I would be interested in helping out and I was more than happy to contribute. This whole experience has been a real eye opener for me.
2011 was my first year volunteering and this 2012 season is my second year. It is fun all the way around. Everyone works as a team here
It is very honorable of Central United Church to allow people in need to use this as a shelter. It’s just a great cause all the way around.
We can always use more cots for the Clients to sleep on and we also need more volunteers, especially overnight volunteers. Anyone that can help with all the cooking would be greatly appreciated too.
I just really love being a part of this.
